Horizon Construction Group Announces Retirement of EJ Gering and Leadership Transition to Ryan Alvin
Madison, Wisconsin — 05/26/2026 — Horizon Construction Group, Inc. (Horizon) announces the upcoming retirement of EJ Gering, President, following more than 21 years of dedicated leadership, growth, and impact within the organization. Gering’s retirement will be effective January 1, 2027.
EJ Gering joined Horizon at a pivotal time in the company’s evolution, helping strengthen field operations and support the organization’s expansion into third-party construction services. From the beginning, he was drawn to Horizon’s culture and leadership, noting a clear commitment to both operational excellence and a “family-first” approach that distinguished the company from others in the industry.
Over the course of his career, Gering progressed from field operations, including roles as a laborer, foreman, and superintendent, to executive leadership, ultimately serving as President of Horizon. His journey reflects a deep understanding of the construction industry and a hands-on commitment to building both projects and people.
During his tenure, Gering played a critical role in shaping Horizon’s growth and operational foundation. When he joined the company, annual construction volume was approximately $40 million; today, the division has grown to nearly $400 million in annual sales.
Among his most significant contributions was advancing Horizon’s safety program and culture. Through consistent expectations, enhanced training, including subcontractor safety orientation, and a focus on accountability, Gering helped elevate safety performance and reduce risk. These efforts contributed to improved insurance outcomes, including participation in a captive insurance program that created both cost savings and new revenue opportunities.
In addition to safety, Gering was instrumental in establishing standardized job site processes, improving operational consistency across projects, and leading the implementation of the company’s project management software, CMiC, a major initiative that strengthened communication, efficiency, and scalability across the construction team.
Beyond operations, Gering’s legacy is rooted in people and culture. He takes pride in the relationships built throughout his career and the role he played in mentoring team members and contributing to their professional growth. His leadership style evolved over time, emphasizing collaboration, fairness, and a genuine commitment to supporting employees and their families.
As part of Horizon’s long-term succession planning, Ryan Alvin, currently Vice President of Horizon Construction Group, will assume the role of President upon Gering’s retirement. Alvin has been a key leader within the organization, contributing to the company’s operational growth, project delivery, and continued expansion. His experience working alongside Gering and deep understanding of Horizon’s culture position him well to lead the organization into its next phase.
“EJ’s impact on Horizon extends far beyond the projects we’ve completed,” said Alvin. “His dedication to safety, operational excellence, and our people has helped shape who we are today and positioned us for continued success in the future.”
As he transitions into retirement, Gering looks forward to spending more time with his family, traveling, and exploring opportunities to stay engaged in the industry through consulting and smaller-scale projects within his community.
Reflecting on the future of Horizon, Gering expressed confidence in the company’s leadership and direction, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the strong culture and adaptability that has driven its success.
Horizon thanks EJ Gering for his leadership, dedication, and lasting contributions to the organization and wishes him all the best in his well-earned retirement.
